Article by Jean-Guy Nadeau, skipper of S/V Callisto (C & C 35), winning boat of 2nd AMIB Fun Sailing Race, 2016.
Fran and I consider ourselves new members of the Association of Mayne Island Boaters having attended last year's picnic (when we signed up) and last weekend, our second, 'other', club event, on May 1st, the second annual Plumper Sound Classic, better known as the AMIB Fun Sailing Race.
It certainly was an ideal day for a boating event with a light wind from the east, slack tide a at the start and four boats signed up. At 10:00 the race was on with a toot from the race committee boat, AlleMare with Allen Slade aboard, photographing the event. For the next few hours the wind played with us, increasing to 10-12 kts and falling to just a breath but the four, determined to play it out, doggedly kept skirmishing for advantage. On the last leg, strange things happened. Kesho fell way back and, we must consider Brian's claim to have stopped at the pub in Lyall Hbr, to have some substance. Toon Town seemed to develop some kind of navigation or tactical problem. She were in a comfortable lead, being pressed hard by Callisto and C'est la Vie but she unexpectedly hauled out of line and went sightseeing.
At the finish line it was Callisto, C'est la Vie,Toon Town, and lastly, Kesho, seemingly quite happy on that last leg. Hmmmm...... Pekona didn't participate in the race but arrived in Port Browning for the festivities.
At the Port Browning Pub prizes were awarded. To Callisto, a 20 dollar bill, that was almost immediately claimed by Sharon for our overdue annual dues. The other prize, a dinner for 2, was awarded to Kesho. Brian gracefully accepted the box of macaroni and cheese and promised to share it with his crew.
Our thanks to Toon Town for letting us win. Some did not believe it but, really, we had taken possession of Callisto the previous week and had just sailed it down from Comox. In fact, we didn't even have a chance to raise the mainsail until we arrived in Navy Channel, on our way to Horton Bay, 2 days before and we unfurled the big genoa for the first time during the race.
The event certainly lived up to its name as a 'FUN' race and we look forward to next year's contest. Maybe last year's winners, Ian and Nes Sutherland (SV Eilean Donan), will be on the start line next year for the 3rd annual AMIB Fun Race.
