Field Trip to Institute of Ocean Sciences, Sidney

Join us for a morning field trip to the Institute of Ocean Sciences at Patricia Bay, Sidney. Experts in their fields will guide us through the Canadian Hydrographic Service department where we will learn how our maritime charts are made. You will be amazed at the work that goes into the creation of our $20 charts as well as the tide table books that we all use.

Marine Communications Traffic Services - MCTS
Our next stop will be a visit to the Maritime Communications Traffic Services (MCTS), headquarters of Channel 16, Victoria Coast Guard. We will be able to watch the traffic controllers at work as they explain what is happening on the water.
We may also have a visit to the Seismic Center (tho the main information centre is in Nanaimo), as well as the Canadian Coast Guard maintenance hangar.

Tour starts 9:30 am until approx. 12:30
Cost: free
Tour size: limited to 12 people
We will carpool and share travel expenses.
Ferry lv at 7:20 am, arriving at 8:10 am. There is a very nice cafeteria at the Institute so we can wait there until the tour begins at 9:30.
Ferry home is either 2:50 with one stop at Saturna, arriving at 4:45 or leaving at 4:15, arriving home at 5:05 non-stop.
